Global Challenges, Global Solutions: Some Remarks
Mr. Chairman 1. Recent experience suggests that globalization offers incredible opportunities but also poses immense challenges. If the years before the global financial crisis - the period of the so called ‘Great Moderation’ - demonstrated the benefits of globalization, the devastating toll of the crisis showed its costs. Sustainability of Economic Growth and Controlling Inflation: The Way Forward
It is my pleasure to speak at FICCI’s National Executive Committee Meeting this year. As many observers have been highlighting, after a relatively long phase of benign, growth-friendly macroeconomic conditions, things have begun to look somewhat hostile on the macroeconomic front. The most significant manifestation of this is the acceleration of inflation, a trend that was visible even before the impact of the financial crisis was felt in late 2008, but which very qui

Lessons for Monetary Policy from the Global Financial Crisis : An Emerging Market Perspective
The global financial crisis has challenged the conventional views on the role of monetary policy. Preparing Indian Banks for Global Competitiveness : Strategic and Policy Perspectives
Introduction It would be no exaggeration to say that the financial world is a vastly different place after the crisis. Many propositions that might have been taken for granted until it precipitated are being questioned in its wake. One set of these surely has to be about the things that go into making banks globally competitive. The increasing visibility and dominance of multinational financial corporations in the years before the crisis contributed to the perception

Central Banks must distill Lessons from the Global Crisis and make Concrete Reforms
Central banks have been at the heart of the global financial crisis. They have been blamed for policies and actions that got the world into the crisis; they have been praised for leading the world out of it. Both are fair assessments. Central banks have been a part of the problem and a part of the solution. As the crisis unwinds and recovery takes hold, central banks face a number of issues, of which I will address five. Volatility in Capital Flows: Some Perspectives
As the crisis is ebbing, capital inflows into emerging market economies (EMEs) have resumed - a consequence of a global system awash with liquidity, the assurance of low interest rates ruling in advanced economies over ‘an extended period’ and the prospects of robust growth in EMEs. Challenges for Central Banks in the Context of the Crisis
Central banks and central bankers have been at the heart of the global financial crisis. We have been blamed for policies and actions that got the world into the crisis; we are also being praised for leading from the front in getting the world out of the crisis. I believe this is fair critique - central banks have been a part of the problem and a part of the solution. 2. The financial crisis became full-blown in the second half of 2008, and has morphed through negative feedback to real activity, plunging the global economy into the deepest recession since World War II. What started off as a sub-prime crisis in the US housing mortgage sector has turned successively into a global banking crisis, global financial crisis and now a global economic crisi

India - Managing the Impact of the Global Financial Crisis

I share the immense admiration and respect you all have for his scholarship, his teaching, and his untiring service for the economics profession and the country. It is indeed a privilege to give a talk in his memory. And it is a special pleasure to follow my long-standing friend Lord Desai, who gave the inaugural lecture in this series.
